Chapter 3. Roof, Windows and Site Utilities. Landscape design of a plot after the house is built: where to start.

The house is built, utilities are connected — time to turn the construction site into a comfortable plot. Landscape design is an engineering and aesthetic system: paths, drainage, lighting, planting and small structures. Done properly, a Leningrad Region plot becomes beautiful and functional in one or two seasons.

When to start: plan before, execute after

The most common mistake is to think about landscape only after construction. Plan landscaping together with the house design — to lay cables for site lighting at foundation stage, plan stormwater and drainage, position septic and well, preserve valuable trees, plan driveways.

Execution begins after the blind area, path bases, fence and all earthworks are done.

Step 1. Master plan — functional zoning

• Front zone — from gate to entrance. Paving, parking, ornamental plants, lighting

• Private zone — behind the house. Terrace, gazebo, BBQ, lawn, playground

• Service zone — far corner: utility shed, compost, woodshed

• Garden/vegetable zone — sunniest spot (south/southwest)

Step 2. Paths and platforms

Base is mandatory: 25–30 cm cut, geotextile, 15 cm crushed stone (20–40 fraction), 5–7 cm sand, plate-compacted. Parking — 20–25 cm crushed stone. Width: main paths 80–120 cm, secondary 50–80 cm, driveway 3–3.5 m.

Step 3. Drainage and irrigation

The Leningrad Region is an excess-moisture zone. Without drainage the plot becomes waterlogged.

Stormwater: point inlets under downpipes, linear gutters along paths, outflow to drainage well or ditch. Cost 40 000–120 000 ₽.

Auto-irrigation: controller, solenoid valves, HDPE pipes, sprinklers. For 10 sotki — from 80 000 ₽. Pipes laid before lawn and planting.

Step 4. Planting

For the region — meadow grass + red fescue mixes (frost- and shade-tolerant).

Plants: spruce, pine, thuja (Smaragd, Brabant), juniper, birch, maple, rowan, spirea, barberry, dogwood, panicle hydrangea (excellent here!), lilac. Hedge: thuja Brabant, glossy cotoneaster, ninebark.

Mature trees (2–4 m, planted): 8 000–40 000 ₽ each; shrubs: 500–5 000 ₽ each.

Step 5. Site lighting

For the Leningrad Region's short winter days, wired lighting is the clear choice. Cable VVGng 3×1.5 in HDPE corrugated tube at 50–70 cm depth, before lawn.

Step 6. Small structures

• Open gazebo (3×3 m): 80 000 — 200 000 ₽

• Glazed gazebo (3×4 m): 200 000 — 500 000 ₽

• Gazebo + BBQ complex: 300 000 — 800 000 ₽

• Brick BBQ: 40 000 — 150 000 ₽

• BBQ paving (8–12 m²): 30 000 — 60 000 ₽

• Children's play set: 40 000 — 200 000 ₽

Leningrad Region specifics

• Acidic soils (pH 4.5–5.5) — lime with dolomite flour 200–400 g/m² every 3–5 yrs

• Short growing season — May–September. Pick frost-tolerant fast growers. Plant April-May or September-October

• Shade-tolerant plants — hosta, astilbe, bergenia, brunnera, ferns, rhododendrons

• High groundwater — plant on raised mounds, drainage, water-loving species (willow, alder, birch)

Timeline

Season 1 (spring-summer): levelling, drainage, cables and irrigation pipes, path bases, paving, mature trees and shrubs.

Season 2 (spring): lawn, flower beds, finishing lighting, small structures.
