The Leningrad Region is one of the wettest in Russia: clay soils, high water table, 600–700 mm annual precipitation. Drainage is a necessity, not a wish — without it the foundation crumbles, the basement floods, the plot turns into a swamp.
Groundwater above 2 m (Vsevolozhsk, Lomonosov, Gatchina, Tosno districts)
Clay/loam soils — 60–70% of the region

Surface (storm) — channels, gutters, downpipe inlets, underground pipes to a collector. Doesn't address groundwater.
Deep (closed) — perforated pipes in trenches below the foundation footing. Layered geotextile + granite gravel + pipe + gravel + geotextile + sand + soil.
Wall-adjacent — along the foundation. Installed during construction; retrofitting costs 2–3× more.
Ring drain — closed loop 1.5–3 m from the house. The most common solution for private homes.
