Panoramic glazing is one of the leading trends in country houses. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in maximum natural light and erase the line between house and garden. But in the Leningrad Region with -25…-30 °C winters and a 220-day heating season the question is fair: won't it be cold?
Natural light — 3–5× more than standard windows
Connection with nature — views from floor to ceiling
Vitamin D — only ~75 sunny days per year, every ray counts
Visual space — even small rooms feel large
House value — 10–15% premium on the market
PVC profiles. Most affordable. Modern Rehau, VEKA, KBE up to 86 mm wide with 6–7 chambers. Max sash 1 500×2 500 mm; bigger openings split into sections with mullions.
Thermal-break aluminium. Schuco, Alutech, Reynaers. Stronger than PVC — thinner frames for larger openings. Polyamide thermal break kills the cold bridge. Sash up to 2 500×3 000 mm. 1.5–2.5× the cost of PVC. Best for large panoramas.
Wood (timber-aluminium). Glulam pine, larch, oak with aluminium cladding outside. Eco-friendly, warmest — and most expensive, requires care.
Sliding systems. Cheap cold-aluminium (Provedal) — verandas only. Warm sliding exists but is much pricier.
Lift-and-slide (HS portals). Sash lifts free of the seal and slides. Excellent sealing, sash up to 3 m wide × 2.7 m tall. Best openable panoramic option. From 80 000 ₽/m².
Frameless. Tempered glass only. Maximum view, minimal insulation. Terraces only.
Max daylight — up to 30% lighting savings
Outstanding views and feel of space
Modern look
Passive solar heating in winter through south windows
Psychological comfort — daylight reduces stress
Higher market value
Heat loss. Glass U = 0.5–0.7 vs wall U = 0.15–0.2. A 6 m² window loses heat as fast as 20–25 m² of insulated wall.
Cost — 3–5× standard windows.
Condensation possible below -15 °C with the wrong unit.
Privacy — solutions: tinting, blinds, plantings.
Cleaning — outside on second floor needs a lift, from 5 000 ₽ a visit.
Furniture — no shelves or cabinets against full glazing.
Security — large glass is a vulnerability.
I-glass (Low-E) — silver-based soft coating reflects up to 90% of thermal IR back. Mandatory minimum for the region.
Multifunctional glass — winter energy + summer solar control. Best for south and west.
Two-chamber vs three-chamber. Standard two-chamber (4-12-4-12-4) with one i-glass: U ≈ 1.0. With two i-glasses and argon: U ≈ 0.6–0.7. Three-chamber: U ≈ 0.4–0.5 but +25–30% weight.
Recommended U for the Leningrad Region: ≤ 0.7 W/(m²·K) — two-chamber with two i-glasses and argon.
Thermal-break aluminium. 24–34 mm polyamide insert: profile U 1.0–1.8 vs 5–7 for cold aluminium. Schuco AWS/ASS, Alutech ALT W72.
Low-E coating. Visible light passes 70–80%, IR reflects back. Up to 40% energy saving — for a house with 20 m² of panoramic glazing that is 15 000–25 000 ₽/year.
Unit U ≤ 0.7 — inner surface stays above +12 °C at -25 °C outside and +22 °C inside
Convector or underfloor heating at the base — warm air rises along the glass
Supply ventilation keeps humidity under 50%
Sill-integrated convectors (Varmann, Eva) — the cleanest aesthetic

Tempered glass — breaks into small safe fragments, 5× stronger. Mandatory for panoramic.
Triplex (laminated) — fragments stay on the PVB/EVA film. Basic burglar resistance.
Security film — stuck inside, 100–300 µm. Budget alternative: 1 500–4 000 ₽/m².
Recommendation: outer glass = tempered triplex (6.6.2). Safety + RC2 burglar class.
South — max winter passive solar; summer needs awnings or trees
West — beautiful sunsets but intense evening sun, multifunctional glass mandatory
East — morning sun, great for bedrooms and kitchens
North — even diffuse light, no solar gain, max heat loss — only for outstanding views
Optimal strategy for the region: main panoramic glazing on south and south-west; standard windows on the north.
