Sewage is often postponed but essential for real country living. A cesspool fails on every count: odour, groundwater contamination, pumping every 2–4 weeks. Modern septic systems solve these issues. Let's review what works for the Leningrad Region.
A family of 4 produces 600–800 L/day. A 5 m³ pit fills in 6–8 days. Pumping at 3 000–5 000 ₽ means up to 240 000 ₽/year. Unsealed pits are forbidden where groundwater is high — which covers most of the region.
Storage tank — sealed plastic/concrete, for occasional-use dachas, 25 000–80 000 ₽

Waste enters the intake chamber where large fractions are broken up. Then the aerotank: a compressor supplies oxygen, aerobic bacteria break organics into sludge. Clean water settles and exits. Excess sludge is pumped out every 3–6 months by the owner.

High groundwater (0.5–1.5 m) over much of the area means: filtering chambers don't work (need raised drain field or BTS to ditch), concrete rings need careful sealing, plastic tanks can float and need anchoring to a concrete slab.
With high groundwater a BTS (Topas, Unilos Astra, BioDeka) is the best choice — cleans to 95–98%, can discharge to a surface ditch.

Ring septic: pump every 1–2 years plus seal checks. BTS: sludge every 3–6 months (self), compressor membranes every 2–3 years (3 000–6 000 ₽), annual service (5 000–12 000 ₽). Bacteria thrive all winter thanks to their own heat, but may starve if the owner is away for 3+ weeks.
