The Leningrad Region has moderate thunderstorm activity — 20–30 storm days per year, mostly May to September. A lightning strike on an unprotected house is rare but can be catastrophic: fried electronics, fires. Full protection costs 50 000–125 000 ₽ — trivial vs potential damage.
Grounding is primarily about human safety. If insulation fails and a live wire touches a metal case, without grounding a person touching it becomes the current path. With grounding, current goes to earth, RCD trips in milliseconds.
TT — recommended for private homes. Own grounding electrode independent of transformer neutral. Works even if neutral breaks on the line. Requires RCD on all circuits.
TN-C-S — PEN splits into N and PE at the entry. Requires reliable grounding and line quality. For rural Leningrad Region, TT is safer.
Classic — three 3 m steel electrodes (50×50×5 mm angle or ⌀16 mm round) driven at triangle vertices 3 m apart. Welded 40×4 mm strip connects them. Strip runs to the main earth bus in the panel. Burial depth: 0,5–0,7 m to top of electrode, then 3 m down. Only welded joints in soil, bolted at the bus. No twisted connections.
Required resistance: ≤10 Ω for TT with RCD, ≤30 Ω per PUE. Region's clay soils (40–100 Ω·m) usually allow this with a standard triangle. Sand needs more electrodes or deep-rod systems.
Modular (deep) grounding — single copper-plated rod driven 15–30 m. Minimal footprint, stable. 25 000–45 000 ₽.
Testing — measure resistance after install, in dry summer weather. 3 000–5 000 ₽. Protocol required by the grid operator.
Three elements: air terminal, downconductor, earth electrode.
Rod terminal — 1–2 m rod on the ridge. 45° protection cone. 10 m wide house may need two rods
Catenary — steel cable along the ridge. Good for long gable roofs
Mesh (Faraday) — ⌀6–8 mm wire in 10×10 or 5×5 m grid. Flat or complex roofs
Downconductor — ⌀8 mm wire or strip, shortest path top-to-bottom. For houses up to 150 m², 1–2 downconductors on opposite corners.
Earth electrode can be shared with the safety earth (R≤10 Ω) or separate. Separate electrodes must be bonded via the equipotential system.
SPDs protect wiring and devices from lightning-induced surges. Even a nearby strike on the power line induces kV-range pulses.
Class I (type B) — at entry, against direct strikes. 5 000–12 000 ₽
Class II (type C) — in distribution panel, against induced pulses. 3 000–8 000 ₽
Class III (type D) — before sensitive gear (boiler, PC, TV). 2 000–5 000 ₽
Minimum for a private house: Class II SPD at the entry. With external lightning protection — add Class I.
Recommended if your house is the tallest in the area, on a hill, isolated, near water, or has a metal roof. Surrounded by taller trees and other buildings the risk drops, but panel SPDs are still advised.
No grounding at all — RCD works but with delay, dangerous
Grounding not tested — corrosion, bad welds, dry soil make a formally-present loop non-functional
No SPD — a lightning rod protects the structure but not electronics from induced surges
Air terminal not connected to the earth electrode — attracts lightning without conducting it. Worse than no protection
