A standing-seam roof is metal sheets joined by a special lock — the seam (falz). Used for centuries on cathedrals and palaces, today it's experiencing a renaissance in private housing. It combines absolute leak-tightness, longevity and aesthetic clarity unmatched by any other metal roofing.
Standing seam — vertical, from ridge to eaves. Single or double.
Lying seam — horizontal across the slope, when slope length exceeds sheet length.
Double standing seam — most reliable. The metal edge is folded twice, creating an absolutely sealed seam. Recommended for slopes under 25° and heavy precipitation — optimal for the Leningrad Region.
Click-seam systems install without special tools but lose to double standing seam in tightness.
Galvanised steel — budget, 15–25 yrs.
Polymer-coated steel — main choice. PE (15–20 yrs), Pural (30–40 yrs, our climate optimum), PVDF (30–40 yrs, max colour stability).
Copper — premium, 100–150+ years, noble patina, no maintenance, 5–8× the price of steel.
Zinc-titanium — 80–120 yrs, grey-blue patina.
Aluminium — light, no rust, 50–70 yrs.
Absolute leak-tightness — no through-holes from screws, hidden clip fasteners
Longevity — 30–50 yrs (steel/Pural), 100+ yrs (copper)
Light weight — 4–7 kg/m², 5–10× lighter than tiles
Works on slopes from 7° — only metal roofing that does
Aesthetics — clean lines, broad palette
40–70% more expensive than metal tile, copper much more
Demands skilled installers and special seam-rolling tools
Noisy in rain — needs 200+ mm mineral wool insulation
Condensate risk — competent ventilation required
Avalanche snow shed — snow guards mandatory
600–750 mm precipitation, 180–240 kg/m² snow load, 50–70 freeze-thaw cycles, strong winds — sealed seams, light weight, smooth surface and hidden clips make standing seam an ideal match.
