An uninsulated roof loses 25–35% of a home's heat. Warm air rises — basic physics. In the Leningrad Region, with its long winters, high humidity and temperature swings, proper roof insulation is critical to protect the structure and save on heating.
Cold attic — classic solution. Insulation goes on the top-floor ceiling, the attic itself stays cold and ventilated. Simple, cheap, reliable for moisture management. Mineral wool 200–300 mm with vapour barrier below. Cost: 600–1 200 ₽/m² with labour.
Warm mansard — living space under the roof. Insulation goes in the sloped construction, exposed to moisture from both sides. Any mistake in the layer cake brings serious problems.
Interior finish — drywall, panelling, etc.
Vapour barrier — critical layer (Izospan B, Jutafol N, Tyvek AirGuard) with 150 mm overlap, sealed joints. Must be fully continuous
Main insulation between rafters — minimum 200 mm for our region
Cross-layer insulation (50–100 mm) across rafters — breaks thermal bridges through wood, +20–25% to real R-value
Diffusion membrane (Tyvek, Izospan AQ) — passes vapour outward, blocks water and wind. Never use plain polyethylene
Counter-battens 40–50 mm create a ventilation gap from eaves to ridge
Battens and roof covering — metal, bitumen shingles, standing seam

Per SP 50.13330.2012, required thermal resistance for roofs is 4,7 m²·°C/W. For basalt wool at λ=0,038 this means at least 200 mm main + 50 mm cross insulation = 250 mm optimum.
Missing or leaky vapour barrier — #1 error. Moisture condenses in insulation, rafters rot in 3–5 years
No ventilation gap — wet insulation, mould, destroyed battens
Insufficient thickness — 100–150 mm with rafters at 150 mm is a classic botched job
Vapour barrier installed outside — catastrophe guaranteed
No cross-layer insulation — thermal bridges cut real R-value by 15–20%
