Water-based underfloor heating is no longer a luxury but the standard for comfortable heating in country houses in the Leningrad Region. With proper design and installation it provides even warmth, saves energy and lasts decades without maintenance. But installation mistakes can turn an expensive system into a source of problems.
A boiler heats the coolant to 35–45 °C. The manifold distributes flow among loops embedded in the floor screed. Key difference from radiators — low supply temperature (30–45 °C vs 60–80 °C), meaning lower fuel use and gentler boiler operation.
Even heat distribution — 24–26 °C at feet, 20–22 °C at head level
20–30% energy savings — a meaningful sum over a 7–8 month heating season
Safety — no hot radiators, floor surface at 26–28 °C
Aesthetics — no radiators, complete freedom in furniture placement
Durability — PE-Xa / PE-RT pipes last 50+ years
Snake — parallel rows. Simple to design, but 5–10 °C difference between start and end. Used in small rooms up to 10–12 m².
Snail (spiral) — from perimeter to centre and back. Hot supply runs next to cooled return — even heating with only 1–2 °C difference. Used in main rooms from 12 m².
In the Leningrad Region with −25…−30 °C winters, reduce the pipe step near external walls (100–150 mm) and increase it in the centre (200–250 mm).
Parameter | Radiators | Underfloor |
|---|---|---|
Supply temperature | 65–75 °C | 35–45 °C |
Gas use per season | ~3 200 m³ | ~2 300 m³ |
Cost per season | ~27 200 ₽ | ~19 550 ₽ |
Savings per season | — | ~7 650 ₽ (28%) |
Savings over 10 years | — | ~76 500 ₽ |
Wrong pipe step (too wide — cold stripes, too narrow — overheating). Optimum 150–200 mm, near external walls 100–150 mm
No insulation under pipes — up to 30–40% of heat is lost downward
Loop longer than 80–100 m for 16 mm pipe — end stays cold
No expansion tape and deformation joints — cracked screed damages pipes
Improper pressure test — must hold 6–8 bar for at least 24 hours
Direct connection to radiator circuit — no mixing unit means 60–70 °C on the floor, damaging flooring
Property | PE-Xa | PE-RT | Multilayer |
|---|---|---|---|
Shape memory | Yes | No | No |
Flexibility | High | High | Medium |
Oxygen barrier | EVOH | EVOH | Aluminium |
Service life | 50+ years | 50+ years | 50+ years |
Freeze resistance | High | Medium | Low |
Price per meter (2026) | 70–120 ₽ | 45–80 ₽ | 80–140 ₽ |
For the Leningrad Region, PE-Xa 16×2.0 with EVOH oxygen barrier is the best choice — reliable, flexible and resistant to accidental freezing.
Item | ₽/m² |
|---|---|
PE-Xa 16 mm pipe | 520–780 |
EPS 50 mm + foil | 250–400 |
Fixings | 80–150 |
Expansion tape | 30–50 |

Manifold (spread over area) | 150–250 |
Pipe installation (labour) | 450–700 |
Turnkey total | 2 080–3 230 |
For a 100 m² house — 208 000–323 000 ₽. Manifold, mixing group and automation — another 25 000–60 000 ₽ per house.
